This article further develops a past article titled "JUST DO IT". There is much to say about what Jesus himself and his half-brother James meand by "be doers of the word". And today, we are going to look more closely to discover what they meant-and how we are to respond to that command.
“TRUE CHRISTIANS-JUST DO IT!” America and the world are full of self-proclaimed Christians, but are those Christians truly saved for eternity according to the Bible and Jesus Christ? Today, I am aging to show you through Luke 8:21, that there is a general litmus test which can be summed up in three simple words as reflective of one’s faith. Those three words are “JUST DO IT”.
James, the brother of Jesus in the Book of James 1:22 says this in the ESV:
“BUT BE DOERS OF THE WORD, AND NOT HEARERS ONLY, DECEIVING YOURSELVES”. The NIV says it this way, “DO NOT MERELY LISTEN TO THE WORD, AND SO DECEIVE YOURSELVES. DO WHAT IT SAYS”. Furthermore, picking up in verse 23, James goes onto say:
“ANYONE WHO LISTENS TO THE WORD BUT DOES NOT DO WHAT IT SAYS IS LIKE SOMEONE WHO LOOKS AT HIS FACE IN A MIRROR AND, AFTER LOOKING AT HIMSELF, GOES AWAY AND IMMEDIATELY FORGETS WHAT HE LOOKS LIKE. BUT WHOEVER LOOKS INTENTLY INTO THE PERFECT LAW THAT GIVES FREEDOM, AND CONTINUES IN IT-NOT FORGETTING WHAT THEY HAVE HEARD, BUT DOING IT-THEY WILL BE BLESSED IN WHAT THEY DO” (James 1:23-25).
SO WHAT! In other words, James is saying that we ought not just be hearers or speakers of God’s word, but that we MUST be “DOERS” of the word. Put another way, Christians MUST “BE DOERS OF THE WORD, AND NOT HEARERS ONLY”. In other words, we must ACT on God’s Word and not simply speak about, read or even hear it. Believers who hear the Word of God (v.19) must receive it with a teachable spirit (v.21), applying it to their daily lives. To hear and not obey it is to be deceived. And this is what I am speaking about today in that we must “JUST DO IT”. I meet many Christians who study God’s Word for the sole reason of “PERSONAL EDIFICATION” only. The problem with personal edification is that it fails as a “VERB” in that they hear but fail to DO or LIVE OUT the Word of God. The man or woman who seeks God’s Word strictly for personal edification is addressed in verses 23-24 which says the he who follows this form of irrational thinking sees “HIS NATURAL FACE IN A GLASS” (or mirror) and “GOES AWAY” without taking any action. This is the Christian who simply OBSERVES, and becomes entirely COGNIZANT of the flaws, and then promptly forgets what he or she saw in the mirror. And this man is what James calls “A CARELESS MAN”.
WHO IS THE CARELESS MAN?
James is saying that the careless man looks in a mirror and forgets what he sees. The earnest man looks into the Word of God and ACTS upon what he sees there. The Word of God is the MEANS of REGENERATION (v.18), the vehicle for Christian growth (v.21), a mirror reflecting man’s defects (v.23), the ethical guide for Christian living (v.25, 2:8) and the standard for judgment (2:12). Jesus made clear that the authentic followre of Christ is one that not ony “HEAR-BUT DO THE WORD OF GOD” LUKE 8:21 says this: “21 But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.” (Luke 8:21)
How can we know our family in Christ, which are those authentic believers in Jesus Christ. They are those who not only HEAR God’s word but those who “JUST DO IT” (v.21). There are many who hear the Word of God but few we actually act on those words, living them out in heart and mind.
So, when we look at ourselves and perhaps others, we can assume with some level of accuracy those who are in a Christ by their life. Do they “DO IT” (Love out the Word of God authentically in their life) or do they simply listen and/or only talk about it-with no action? The proof is in the putting. It’s a new week and I want to encourage all you to just “DO IT”!
CONCLUSION
In Conclusion, Believers who are “MERELY HEARERS” of biblical truth are self deceived. A believer who does not act on truth is like. “MAN WHO LOOKS AT THIS NATURAL FACE IN A MIRROR” (v.23). James is referring to our spiritual birth (.v18) and will allude to our new self in the “LAW OF LIBERTY” (v.25). So when James speaks of the man’s “SPIRITUAL FACE” he is speaking literally about “THE FACE OF ONE’S BIRTH,” which corresponds to the believer’s spiritual birth. The Christian looks Lin the mirror of God’s Word at his new. Self, transformed by new birth . But the Christian who has “GONE AWAY” from the mirror has tragically “FORGOTTEN WHAT KIND OF PERSON HE” is in Christ.
WHY IS THIS IS BAD? Because failing to learn from your mistakes increases the likelihood of repeating them. This can lead to a cycle of making the same errors over and over again, hindering your progress and growth. In the end, making the same mistakes over and over again leads to a big problem with is that we don’t release future mistakes until it’s too late. Why are we not learning from this mistakes? Because we listen, read and take in God’s Word on every level, but fail to apply it to our lives, failing to “JUST DO IT”.
As Christians we MUST “BE DOERS OF THE WORD, AND NOT HEARERS ONLY”. In other words, we must ACT on God’s Word and not simply speak about, read or even hear it. As believers who hear the Word of God (v.19), we must receive it with a teachable spirit (v.21) and apply it to our daily lives. To hear and not obey it is to be deceived. And this is what I am speaking about today in that we must “JUST DO IT”.
