“REPUTATION OVER PROFIT-Our Cultural Division - Our current world values great riches and poor character over a good name, reputation and character. As the rich have grown richer and the poor more poor, a divide has been created. And that divide should not be dividing the church. Today, I want to show you through the ancient Proverbs, that ultimate success and profit are found in a good name, good character and a good reputation.
Proverbs 22:1-2 says, “A GOOD NAME IS TO BE CHOSEN RATHER THAN GREAT RICHES, AND FAVOR IS BETTER THAN SIVLER OR GOLD. THE RICH AND THE POOR MEET TOGETHER; THE LORD IS THE MAKER OF THEM ALL”.
Let’s break this down and then I will comment on the depth of what God is saying here.
A GOOD NAME: This speaks to the fact that GOOD CHARACTER and the REPUTATION that should go with that character is to be chosen before profit, riches and power. This proverb points out that a reputation has more value than possessions or wealth and that a NAME cannot be replaced easily, not every with lots of money.
Verse 2, “The rich and poor meet together; the Lord is the make of them all” eloquently repeats the theme of riches in verse 1: God make both “THE RICH AND THE POOR”. This means that those who favor the rich over the poor (James 2), have not only missed the point of creation, but also have insulted the Creator (14:31) which says, “WHOEVER OPPRESSES A POOR MAN INSULTS HIS MAKER, BUT HE WHO IS GENEROUS TO THE NEEDY HONORS HIM”.
IN CONCLUSION
Wealth should not be valued above reputation (v.1). A good reputation (a good name, favor) is worth more. Wealth along cannot secure it. Only wisdom can (3:1-4). Wealth also should not give one superior airs (v.2). The “RICH AND THE POOR HAVE A COMMON BOND” in that both are created by “THE LORD” and so both are image bearers of Him. This reality should be a “school of virtue” for both.: “the poor shall not envy the rich” (Proverbs 3:31), and “the rich shall not despise the poor”
Our current world values great riches and poor character over a good name, reputation and character. As image bearers of God, both the gap between the rich and poor must be shortened. It should not and will never go away, but the gap should and can be shortened. As the rich have grown richer and the poor more poor, a divide has been created. And that divide should not be dividing the church. Both should be striving to establish a good name and godly character. If we can do this, peace will once again prevail in our country and around the world-as ultimate success and profit are found in a good name, good character and a good reputation.
