Living in a digital world can harm biblical discipleship because the digital world seems like reality. Furthermore, in making disciples of all the earth, we often think of our Lord God as being way up in heaven and us being way down here on earth. Today, I am going to show you that God worked with the Disciples of Jesus in PERSON and that He does the same with you and I today through the HOLY SPIRIT, PRAYER and reading HIS WORD as His disciples in the 21st Century. To short change that by digital download substitutions is a huge mistake. Let’s get started.
Our modern age has forged a craving for immediate gratification-from Amazon.Com to home delivery of food. Technology makes the fake digital world seem like reality. As a result, we don’t see God as clear as we once did. It has also led to LESS HUMAN CONTACT WITH ONE ANOTHER. Before Amazon, we had to physically go to the store and speak with people as opposed to order online.
This has now bled into the Great Commission by Jesus given to us in Matthew 28 regarding making disciples of all the earth. Reaching people with a digital message is not the same as “discipleship”. Discipleship takes time+thinking and praying through God's Word and life in general in person+verbal communication+wisdom+real people interacting as opposed to digital downloads. I’m not saying that there is not a place for digital downloads; only that it’s not true “DISCIPLESHIP”. That is what I want to speak with you about today.
The digital world can become a distraction to our spiritual health and growth if we are not careful. Digital downloads in and of themselves can and are very good, giving us access to information and equipping that might not obtain otherwise. This is fine as long a we don't substitute digital for human interaction. It should be human interaction plus digital content. In this way, it enhances our ability to best properly and biblically share our faith with the lost world and disciple others. With that point, established, I want to shift to the source of truth, the Bible to make the simple point that God is very much with us here today; not in a digital way, but in a literal, spiritual, personal and real way. Digital presence is not the same as the presence of the Holy Spirit by ANY STRETCH. I want to pick up a conversation I had earlier on the subject:
GOD IS WITH AND WORKS THROUGH US IN A REAL WAY TODAY AS HE DID UPON JESUS’ ASCENSION INTO HEAVEN-LEAVING US THE HOLY SPIRIT
God is willing, able and desiring to work with and through His followers in the 21st Century as he did more than two thousand years ago. In an effort to show this truth, we will be looking at the very last chapter of Book of Mark, chapter 16 19-20. Before we start, let’s gain some pretext of what Jesus said just before his ascension in order to get proper context.
Before the Ascension of Jesus Christ in Mark 16, Jesus said to the eleven (all but Judas), “GO INTO ALL THE WORLD AND PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL TO THE WHOLE CREATION. WHOEVER BELIEVES AND IS BAPTIZED WILL BE SAVED, BUT WHOEVER DOES NOT BELIVE WILL BE CONDEMNED” (Mark 16:15-16).
