One day, we will all expire from the clay body the Lord has given us. At that time, we will know if God through Jesus Christ is proud or ashamed us-based on whether we lived out a life in mission or one of leisure on our own terms. The choice is ours. In an effort to bring greater clarity to today's lesson, I want to turn to Mark 8:38 for the answer.
In Mark 8:38, Jesus says, “FOR WHOEVER IS ASHAMED OF ME AND MY WORDS IN THIS ADULTEROUS AND SINFUL GENERATION, OF HIM WILL THE SON OF MAN ALSO BE ASHAMED WHEN HE COMES IN THE GLORY OF HIS FATHER WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT”.
We live in very interesting times. We live in a time whereby living out the Christian faith is not easy as it has been in the past. As difficult as it maybe, we should be aware of what it means to deny or be ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. WHY? Because if we are ashamed of Jesus, He will be ashamed of us. It's a simple truth. Let's look at the main point and then I will provide a bit of application for this short verse in light of what Jesus is saying.
THE POINT: Do we seek a life of leisure or a life of mission? “When He (Jesus) comes in the glory” is the key of Jesus' address to His disciples in (Vss. 34-38). It is the first glimpse of the fulfillment of all history (1 Corinthians 15:24-28). Those who will reign with Christ invest their lives in that which will last (v.15). Those who are willing to confess Him today will be rewarded before the Father in heaven (Matthew 5:10-12; 2 Timothy 2:11-13; Revelation 2:26-28). To live a static life in limbo without mission is to live a self-centered existence, void of God's will for your life. In truth, we need to ask ourselves, "Is the underlying issue one of being ashamed of the Gospel?" I will leave that to each person to analyze for themselves. Please remember that God makes that final determination, not us.
APPLICATION: There is much to be gained in this world, but what if a person should gain everything the world has to offer? How much could he or she take with him or her behind the grave? A second rhetorical question follows: “FOR WHAT WILL A MAN GIVE IN EXCHANGE FOR HIS SOUL?” There is nothing one can give in exchange for his soul. In this statement Jesus reflected on His return to this earth in power and glory as Judge. People who have not committed themselves to Jesus as Savior are classic examples of those who live in an “ADULTEROUS AND SINFUL GENERATION”. Therefore when He comes in the glory of the Father with the holy angels to EXERCISE judgment, they will be denied admission to the millennial kingdom. Thats a very sobering thought.
And as Jesus himself said in Mark 8:38, “FOR WHOEVER IS ASHAMED OF ME AND MY WORDS IN THIS ADULTEROUS AND SINFUL GENERATION, OF HIM WILL THE SON OF MAN ALSO BE ASHAMED WHEN HE COMES IN THE GLORY OF HIS FATHER WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT”.
The bottom line is that IF YOU ARE ASHAMED OF JESUS-HE WILL BE ASHAMED OF YOU. Please think about this simple truth in light of your life, actions, thoughts and life-mission.
