This Christmas season, I sit quietly, pondering what exactly God did in bringing His only son into this sinful world specifically to die for you and I and all would receive Him as Lord and Savior. I pondered the numerous times that I ought to have literally died in my life time thus far: And there were a number of times I ought to have died but do to God’s hand pulling me from the fires of death. My conclusion is that God is real and active in our daily lives, even when He seems silent. God shows up when we least expect Him to. God shows up to carry us through trials and is there with us when it’s time to emerge from the fires of our earthly trials. Psalm 66:10 says, “For you, O God have tested us; you have tried us as silver is tried”. God takes us through not from trials for a very real purpose and we ought to be aware of that, give thanks for that, and share that with others as part of our testimony.
I concluded that life is not just about having fun, recreation, building wealth and living an easy life. That’s a distortion of the “American Dream”-not the American dream itself. Having fun and an easy time in life is what we all strive for, but avoiding the real world has become epidemic in America and throughout much of the West. But this begs the question as to SO WHAT?
THE POINT is that we ought to be sensitive in seeing God’s hand working in our lives. We should be humbled, thankful and in sheer awe by the fact that God sent His only Son for our salvation and not take that for granted amongst the Christmas season commercial noise. I want to share with you one man’s experience in having drowned in a river, was by God’s grace found, and is perfectly healthy today. Did he say he was lucky? Did he give credit to the amazing medical technology or the wisdom of the doctors as having saved him? Or did he give credit to almighty God? Let’s see.
Actor Jesse Hutch from “Great American Family’s” new film, “A Christmas Blessing”-in an interview with CBN Digital by Billy Hallowell, December 17, 2023, 10:36:36 AM said, “I SHOULD BE DEAD” after a shocking recovery after a near-death experience when he nearly drowned. Hutch often stars in romantic comedies and most fans don’t know that he is a devout Christian who came to accept Christ as his savior as a young child.
Hutch’s parents divorced when he was younger which sent him on a quest to explore his faith more deeply. That faith deepened even further with his getting married, having children of his own and building a career in acting.
Hutch said this. “God loves you…When I look back on my life, there was a definite hand that kept me out of trouble in many ways”.
When Hutch was working as a whitewater raft guide decades ago (as a younger man) he got trapped underwater for between 11 and 22 minutes and nearly died. He said, “I drowned when I was 21 years old…That was another miracle in my life…I should be completely, honestly dead. I shouldn’t have lived, and, if I did, I shouldn’t be able to speak, I shouldn’t be able to hear, [and] I shouldn’t be abel to talk”.
What happened is that by God’s grace, someone randomly found Hutch underwater and transported him to a hospital, where they put in a pressure chamber. As a result, what should have taken his life was used by God and he was healed within weeks. Hutch said, “It is an absolute miracle, man…I was fine. My ear drums didn’t completely explode…they should have”.
In the Book for Luke, Chapter 17, Jesus opens verse 1-6 laying out the importance of “forgiveness”. In verses 7-10 Jesus rolls that into the importance of “service” to others and to God” which is God’s love in action in light of that forgiveness. Then Jesus develops that into the importance of “gratitude” in verses 11-19 with the Parable Of The Leapers. This passage always amazed in in that Jesus is passing by ten lepers who from a distance were crying out to Jesus, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us” (vs. 13). All ten of them were healed! What amazes me about this parable is the simple fact that only one of the ten returned to give praise, glory, credit and THANKS to Jesus for healing him-and he was a Samaritan who were considered unclean to the Jewish people!
Verses 17-19 says “Now he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus answered, “were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner? And he said to him, “Rise and go your way: your faith has made you well” (Luke 17: 17-19).
Like the parable of the Ten Leaders that Jesus Healed, Hutch believes that God Himself saved his life and gives all thanks to almighty God for stepping in and preserving his life, and fully healing him. Hutch believes his survival is a reminder of God’s “hand on” his life.
The one Samaritan/healed leper in Luke was representative of those outside Israel who were responding to Jesus’ message while the other nine lepers illustrated the Jews who rejected Him. You and I may not reject him outright as our country and world is decaying and being made into (or allowed to by God to be transformed into) something new, but many of us feel as though God has rejected us and in turn, we ignore Him.
I think that in our lack of discipline and faith, if not careful (in our current trials) we may feel as if God is not there for us because things are not going back to the way they used to be. I submit with great confidence that things are not going back to the way they used to be. That is called “history”. And history means change. And change most often comes through difficult times before smoother waters prevail. And like Hutch, sometimes God leaves us underwater for 11-22 minutes in order to allow trials to reform our thinking and draw back toward Him. When we are ready we will find ourselves giving God all credit, glory and thanks for taking us through the fires and not from them in order for us to become more mature in our faith and closer to HIm.
TRIALS AND SUFFERING ARE NECESSARY AND GOOD: In the words of Jesus’ brother James: “2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:2-4).
The ESV says it this way: “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect , that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing”.
Let’s pause for a moment to give God all glory and thanks for allowing us to be alive today. Let’s give him thanks for all the material things, the freedom and comfort we have instead of focusing on we have lost. In the end, let’s be like that one Samaritan leper and come back and give thanks to God for what we have, and avoid being like the nine Jewish lepers who took their gain and celebrated the blessing of their “healing”, but gave no thanks or credit to God almighty as their “Healer”. Actor Jesse Hutch did just that and he is a movie star-which makes him a much larger target for the world. If he can do it so we you and I. And this is what it means to give thanks to God through the most difficult trials in life. I pray you ingest this and live out in reality-Steven
