The Bible is often very specific regarding what God expects from His people. His expectations are no exception. Today, I will show you five very specific requirements God gave to His people Israel in 1 Samuel and us today, in order for things to go well-or not.
The Bible is full of Scripture about how we are to think, act, select our leaders, treat our neighbors, worship God and live our lives. Looking at 1 Samuel Chapter 12, we find the Old Testament prophet Samuel giving his farewell address to the Israelites as he hands off the reigns of leading God’s people to a human king, king Saul (who they insisted on over God himself). Through Samuel, God gave Israel and us today, five very, very specific conditions or requirements-that if followed would result in things going well for God’s people. But if these five requirements or conditions were and are not followed, things would not go well for them as they will not go well for us today in the 21st Century.
Let’s read verse 1 Samuel 12:14 and break down those five requirements and look at what God says will happen when God’s people fail to do so. Let’s jump in by reading verse 14 and then breaking that verse down into the five requirements necessary for God's blessings according to 1 Samuel.
“14 If you will fear the Lord and serve him and obey his voice and not rebel against the commandment of the Lord, and if both you and the king who reigns over you will follow the Lord your God, it will be well” (1 Samuel 12:14).
FIRST: GOD’S PEOPLE MUST FEAR THE LORD: “If you will fear the Lord”.
SECOND: GOD’S PEOPLE MUST SERVE THE LORD: “and serve him…”
THIRD: GOD’S PEOPLE MUST OBEY GOD’S VOICE: “and obey his voice…”
FORTH: GOD’S PEOPLE MUST NOT REBEL AGAINST THE COMMANDMENT OF THE LORD: “…and not rebel against the commandment of the Lord…”
FIFTH: GOD REQUIRES THAT BOTH KING, PRESIDENT, PRIME MINISTER AND NATIONAL LEADERS AS WELL AS GOD’S PEOPLE IT”S CITIZENS FOLLOW GOD’S REQUIREMENTS IN ORDER FOR THINGS TO GO WELL FOR THEM: “…and if both you and the king who reigns over you will follow the Lord your God, it will be well.”
But what happens as a result or consequence of NOT obeying the voice of the Lord (#3)? In the very next verse-verse 15, God makes clear those consequences. Before we read about those consequences listed verse 15, I want to note that despite “Obeying the voice of the Lord” (the third requirement) actually undergirds how we “SERVE” (#2) our Lord. How could we serve Him properly if we do not listen to and obey His Word?
Furthermore, God lists as the First (#1) condition or requirement, that God’s people must FEAR the Lord which is the beginning of all wisdom and knowledge . Proverbs 1:7 says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction” (NIV).
IN CONCLUSION: God's blessings must be carried out in obedience by both it's citizens, including God's people and their governmental representatives/leaders. You just can't have one or another and expect blessings upon your nation (not speaking of individual blessings), The Bible is very specific here in 1 Samual regarding what God expects from His people in ligh of His dispensing blessings upon persons and nations. Today, I have shown you five very specific requirements according to God through 1 Samuel to His people Israel in 1 Samuel and in applicaiton-to us today, in order for things to go well-or not. Please think through this. DEEPER DIVE===========================
With all this in mind, let’s dig deeper and look at what God tells us will be the consequences should Israel at the time of Samuel and for us to day in application can expect. Let’s read 1 Samuel 12: 15.
“15 But if you will not obey the voice of the Lord, but rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then the hand of the Lord will be against you and your king” (1 Samuel 12:15).
Simply put if we fail to obey our Lord’s voice, meaning His Word and leading us as King, and instead rebel against His word and commandments, then His hand, the hand of the Lord will not be in our favor, but against his people, meaning it’s citizens and it’s human king.
16 Now therefore stand still and see this great thing that the Lord will do before your eyes” (1 Samuel 12:11-16)
Let’s read 1 Samuel 12:11-16 and look at the five conditions God requires in order for him to give His blessing or judgement on that nation and its government. Starting in 1 Samuel 12 verse 11.
“And the Lord sent Jerubbaal and Barak and Jephthah and Samuel and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and you lived in safety” (vs.11).
I want to point out here that it was the Lord who SENT Jerubbaal and Barak and Jephtah and Samuel who delivered the Israelites out of the hands of their enemies. This sets the seen for verse 12 which illustrates the human sin nature and condition which seems to lead us towards desiring a human king over God as our King. Let’s pick up in verses 12-13.
“12 And when you saw that Nahash the king of the Ammonites came against you, you said to me, ‘No, but a king shall reign over us,’ when the Lord your God was your king. 13 And now behold the king whom you have chosen, for whom you have asked; behold, the Lord has set a king over you.”
What had happened is that when Nahash the king of the Ammonites came against Isreal, they INSISTED on a HUMAN king to lead them and fight their battles for them-“when the Lord your God was your (their) king” already. In verse 13, Israel chose Saul and God set Saul over them as their human king to lead them. I find this interesting because it shows that while God is in control, knows all things (omniscience), is all powerful (omnipotent) and infinite, He sill grants us free will as to how we order our lives and the decisions that guide our lives and nation. What God did NOT do is allow Israel to shake God off altogether in having a human king over God as their supernatural King. He (God) just added to it. In other words, God’s people got their human king, but still had to adhere to five specific requirements in addition to or in conjunction with His providing them as He does you and I today with a king, president, prime minister and the like.
