CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP IN A DARK WORLD: We live in a very dark world at present, but it doesn't have to be that way with one another. Today I’m going to show you the secret of Christian fellowship.
John wrote in 1 John 1:7, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”
The secret to authentic Christian fellowship starts with God because God is Light. When we fellowship with God, we fellowship in the Light. When we fellowship in the Light (God) we see not only God, but also other authentic followers in Jesus Christ. When we are mysterious and not-transparent in our fellowship with one another, we fail to reflect God’s light. And as a result, we fail to offer innocent, transparent, true, and authentic fellowship with one another.
Because God is light, there is no darkness at all in Him. In our quiet time, in the study of His Word, and in our communication with Him (listening and speaking to Him through prayer) throughout our day, we must be transparent with God and with one another as trusted believers. If we SAY we have fellowship with God but walk in darkness, we lie to God and to other believers because we do not practice the truth.
If we walk in God’s light daily things in life become brighter because God “IS” Light. Remember that God in His own light light leads us to authentic Christian fellowship and with God.
I want to repeat John 1 John 1:7 which says: “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” Please read 1 John chapter on in it’s entirety and for not, let's focus on 1 John 1:5-7 which says this:
“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”
BIBLICALLY AND THEOLOGICAL SUMMARY: Verse seven says, “But if we walk in the light”. To walk in the light is to live in obedience to God’s commandments. two things result from walking in the light: 1) Fellowship with other believers, 2) Continual cleansing from sin (since walking int the light brings to light other sins that need cleansing). The contrast of light and darkness characterizes the section from 1:5-2:27.
The bottom line is that we live in a very dark world, void of a clear understanding of the true God of the universe as spoken about since the beginning of time and documented in the Holy Scritpures called the Bible. For us as believers, the light of God through Jesus Christ leads us to others in the light. What does that mean? It means that authentic Christian fellowship starts with finding others who are truly in the light (not in the name of Christianity only). We can start this journey of finding others in the light by avoiding being transparent with those in our inner circle of friends and with others around us (to some degree), because, when we are mysterious and non-transparent in fellowship with one another (especially as men), we fail to reflect God’s light, hence we fail to be and achieve true, authentic fellowship with one another. Even with those we just met, if we are transparent before them, we make ourselves vulnerable and risk being hurt. That is OK if we give more of ourselves away than we normally would, but not too much. It’s like investing in the stock market. Don’t invest (gamble) what you cannot afford to lose). Most of us can afford to lose a bit more of hurt thank we think in light of finding those truly in the light of God. I submit that the ONLY way to find authentic friends in Christian fellowship is by doing this; by being in the light, risking a bit of hurt, and being honest, trustworthy and authentically, and loving with one another. In the end, the risk is worth it. Remember, the secret of Christian fellowship starts with God because God is Light. When we start with authentic fellowship with God, we fellowship in the Light because God is the light. When two or more authentic followers are in fellowship with God and in the real Light, provided us by the blood of Jesus Christ, we have a rare, wonderful, authentic fellowship that can only be likened to heaven on earth.
