Picking up from our last entry, “WHAT KEEP’S YOU UP AT NIGHT”, I want to pick up today by addressing the question as to, “Does God Experience Pleasure?” To refresh the conversation from our last entry, according to the Stanford Dictionary, pleasure is defined as: “a feeling of happy satisfaction and enjoyment”: Including the affective positivity of all joy, gladness, liking, and enjoyment – all our feeling good or happy.
Sadly, in our modern, sinful age, we more often first think of or equate pleasure only to pleasure brought on by sex (outside of marriage in most cases), drugs, alcohol, and the countless other worldly pleasures.
The biblical answer to our question as to “Does God experience pleasure” in short is simply “YES”, God experiences pleasure. But His pleasure is all-good, all-perfect, and all clean. Psalm 149:4 tells us this: “For the LORD takes PLEASURE in His people…” Psalm 149 is a hymn and a summons to PRAISE God (vss. 1-4). This is important because praise in many if not most cases flows out of our love, appreciation and yes, pleasure for God and others
While we as humans take pleasure in vacations, recreation, our pets, wealthy and each other, the LORD takes pleasure in mainly one thing, which is His people. Psalm 147 tells us, “His delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor his pleasure in the legs of a man, but the Lord takes pleasure in those who FEAR him, in those who hope in his steadfast love” (Psalm 147:11). Looking at the inverse, 147:10-11 makes clear that the Lord does not take delight or pleasure in physical strength but in reverential trust in His people.
A such, our HOPE as “God’s people” and our STEADFAST love for God Himself is the secret to obtaining true PLEASURE in this life. When we love intentionally and seek God authentically, we will by default seek out others who do the same. As a result, we will be able to identify and connect with other authentic Christians in fellowship, friendship, and yes pleasure (as God’s people). Sadly, the world seeks pleasure in the selfish, temporal, carnal and physical sense. The good news is that we as Christians can avoid such artificial pleasure because we have access to a supernatural pleasure only found in Jesus Christ through His Spirit.
Psalm 149 says that the LORD adorns the humble with salvation. “For the LORD takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation” (Psalm 149:4). We as humans are imperfect, but we certainly can be honest, authentic, humble and appreciative for our salvation in Christ. I spoke with a man this week who said he is sick of Christians who don’t act rightly. I responded to him in that he would be wise to not blame “Christendom” for the actions of dumb Christians. I got that line from Dr. Norman Geisler by the way if it seems a bit direct. In short, we nee do understand that when we seek pleasure in fellowship and friendship with other Christians that we should be discerning and wise. As Christians ourselves though, we are wise to be careful that we are living our a selfless not a selfish life in light of developing authentic friendships and fellowship according to God’s model for finding pleasure in others (God’s people).
In both of these Psalms we find God taking pleasure in one thing- “In His people”. Isn’t that interesting that despite owning the entire universe that God find pleasure in one and only one thing…”In His people”. It seems that my parents and grandparents generation reflected God’s understanding of godly pleasure more biblically. They took pleasure in their children, grandchildren, and the next generation while we (the younger generations) tend to find pleasure in the material world. The younger generation tends to for the most part seek pleasure in the comforts of our artificial world through physical, tangible pleasures. Past generations had it more right because they were more right with God than the present generation. We should stop and reflect on what that means and how we can get back to finding true pleasure as past generations did.
In the end, despite our living in a sinful world, you and I can choose to NOT equate pleasure with sex, wealth or any other physical pleasures. It’s our choice not to choose the countless carnal pleasures we as humans use as a poor substitute for God’s authentic pleasure with others who are authentic followers of Christ (God’s people). If you and I pursue God and others rightly and steadfastly, we too can and will experience a supernatural pleasure in contrast to widely available human’s distorted idea of true pleasure. If we do this, many of the worlds problems will subside. The choice is ours. In the end, let’s remember: “For the LORD takes PLEASURE in His people” (Psalm 149). If we follow God’s lead and “Delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4).
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
1) DOES GOD EXPERIENCE PLEASURE?
2) WHAT IS THAT GIVE'S GOD PLEASURE?
3) WHAT DOES MAN FIND PLEAUSRE IN?
4) CAN MAN EXPERIENCE THE SAME PLEASURE THAT GOD DOES?
5) HOW DOES GOD'S PLEASURE RELATE TO EARTHLY, GODLY CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP?
