A good friend of mine James said to me, folks who “Fail to plan-Plan to fail”. I’m a planner by discipline, and now seemingly in my genetic order. There is a lot of Scripture on the value of planning and on over-planning, which can lead to “apathy” and disobedience and a lack of wisdom in God’s teaching and direction.
In my devotion this morning came out of my reading in Matthew 21, whereby Jesus “sent two disciples, saying to them, ”Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them, and he will send them at once.” This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying-Say to the daughter of Zion, Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden”.
This gives us the first part of the equation in that as Christ followers we need to plan. I hear all too often from Christians, sediments of “apathy” as to “why plan-Jesus is coming back”. True, but when He is to return, and in the mean while, we have work to do. Let’s pause to realize that as Christians-we are leaders, and leaders plan, but also positively react to unexpected opportunities, obstacles, and challenges. Do you have clear goals in mind, even if general?
In Exodus 25-40, we see in extreme detail the “planning” and construction of the tabernacle. God provides a blueprint that any architect would admire. Jesus was a planner. Whether telling His disciples to prepare a boat by the water in advance of the crowds descending up on them, or having to deal with difficult Pharisees and other leaders, Jesus was prepared. And so should we. As we read on in Matthew, God makes clear that we must be prepared, and be prepared for action “for the right reasons” and for “the right things”. Matthew 21:9 says in light of Jesus riding in on a donkey in Matthew 21, “And the cores that went before him and that followed him were shouting, Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
This is a beautiful verse, but when the crowds were shouting “Hosanna” they were crying out to Jesus to “save us now!” The acclamation is a quotation based on Psalm 118:25-27, sung at the Feast of Booths. What’s the point? The crowed wanted to be salivation from the oppression of Rome, not the spiritual salvation that Christ offered. It’s OK to ask God to give us wisdom to prepare not only spiritually but also practically with our wealth. If not, the Christian ability to sustain our wealth for God’s use and glory will be diminished-an we do not want that. How would churches and para-churches be funded? How would we be able to more easily minister to others if our financial burdens were multiplied as they already are beginning to do.
This serves as a reminder to all of us in our modern age as to what we are asking God for. Are we asking God to draw us closer in and through the godless-craziness happening all around us? Are we planning and asking God as to how we can be used in the craziness of this world to share the gospel message with the lost-with our unsaved neighbors, co-workers, family members and wherever the Lord places us? You don’t have to be an international missionary to minister to folks around the world today. I minister to folks on every continent of the world through the Reason For Truth Podcast. I have been faithfully producing two podcasts every week for over 6 years now, and God is using that to humbly reach folks around the world. You can do the same however the Lord calls you. With massive immigration, especially within the USA and Europe, we can minister to the nations from our own backyard, in our workplace, online, to our co-workers, and anywhere we have access to.
In closing, we must be prepared to minister to those of different cultures. But, to do so, we must “PREPARE”. This is where apologetics comes in as a secondary source to the main source-the Bible. I will get to this shortly. In the end, Jesus’ master PLAN for salvation of mankind is the most brilliant and we inspiring one ever conceived. His planning was precise, timely and essential to God’s master plan for you, me and all mankind who would accept His plan for salvation in Jesus Christ. Even in the seemingly small things, Jesus planned; from the colt ready for His triumphal entry into Jerusalem to an upper room ready for the Last Supper, Jesus made things happen by planning-planning for the right things.
As I write this, we are planning a 25 mile backpack trip in very cold weather, some heavy wind, 3” of snow at the top of the mountain and difficult terrain. What we will eat each day. How we will stay warm. And the list goes on. The trip is planned out to the mile-where we will God willing set up camp each night. There for sure will be unexpected challenges to arise-but as Christian and as leaders, we are prepared to react quickly and rightly as best we can to those challenges-ultimately trusting and relying on God.
As Christians, let’s follow the model the Master left for by His very example. And finally, let’s make sure that we are planning for the right things, not the wrong ones. We live in very difficult times. As Christians, we must avoid apathy and look to preserve our wealth, our ability to freely share Christ and minister to others. The question is-“are you planning, preparing as best you can with what God has given you?” If so, what exactly are you doing as such?
“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established” (Proverbs 16:9). “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps” (Proverbs 15:22).

In the end: “For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid the foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish” (Luke 14:28-30). The decision is yours now-will you plan as best you can? Remember, “fail to plan is to plan to fail”. -Steven Garofalo
