“THREE ELEMENTS OF AN AUTHENTIC CHRISTIAN”
A lot can be said about what it means to be a Christian. Today, I want to give your three simple things that are essential to being an “authentic” follower of Jesus Christ. This is not a exhaustive list, but it’s an essential list that cannot be compromised-in other words, these three things/elements must be present and acted upon in mind, body and spirit in order to be a true, authentic follower of Jesus Christ.
- THE FIRST ELEMENT THAT MUST BE PRESENT IN AN AUTHENTIC CHRISTIAN IS TO BE “SPIRITUALLY” not literally “crucified with Christ.” Crucifixion with Christ means “death to-or separation from the reigning power of the old sinful life which gives us a new freedom to experience the power of the resurrection life of Christ by faith” (See Romans 6:6). Paul and every authentic believer, including you and have been crucified with Christ in order to die to sin, the law, and to “this present evil age” (1:4). This make clear that our present evil age, as depraved as it is, is not to be embraced, negotiated with, or accepted in light of God’s Word and the Holy Spirit. We must understand and embrace the simple fact that we have already been crucified and our “good works” won’t get us to heaven. This leads us to the second essential element of an authentic Christian.
- THE SECOND ESSENTIAL ELEMENT OF AN AUTHENTIC CHRISTIAN IS THAT: It is no longer you and I who live, but Christ who lives in us. In other words, what Paul wrote in Galatians 2:20 is that Christ had taken up His an abode in Paul, yet He (God) did so without doing away with or submerging Paul’s own personality. You see, while we as believers live on physically after receiving Christ and becoming a new creation, Christ also now lives within us spiritually. As a result, Christ’s resurrection power through the Spirit of God is worked out through the Christian who chooses to live by faith in the Son of God” (Romans 6:4-11). Folks, must be of our free choice. It cannot be coerced, forced or handed down through family, tradition or culture. This is done of our own free will and as a result we should make the daily effort to live as new creatures in Christ by choosing to live by God’s ways as opposed to the ways of this “evil age”. I understand this is not easy. As a matter of fact, it’s a daily struggle, and this leads us to number three.
- THIRD: THE LIFE WE NOW LIVE IN THE FLESH WE LIVE BY “FAITH” IN THE SON OF GOD-JESUS CHRIST: First, lets remember that what we talked about in our SECOND point which is that we as Christians “choose”, out of our own “free will” to live by faith in the Son of God-Jesus Christ. We still use the Law as a standard or a metric to help guide us, but our heart is not to be focussed on keeping the law for the law’s sake, but to please the Father through the Son of God by the help of the Holy Spirit. It is a daily struggle for you and I to live a godly-biblical life in the “evil age” we find ourselves in. Remember, Jesus said, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them” (Matthew 5:17). I realize that this is easier said than done. Jesus said this in Matthew 19:24, “Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God”. When Jesus’ disciples asked him who then can be saved, Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible”. In other words, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ through His crucifixion is the lynch pin, the essential element that made us free from eternal damnation by way of Jesus Christ taking our sins upon Himself on our behalf. That is how we know the mark of an authentic Christian rests upon his or her authentically being crucified with Christ and living that conviction out in their daily life.
- IN CLOSING, this was made possible through God’s love-“Because He and only He: “loved us and gave himself for us.” It is no longer you and I who live, but Christ who lives in us. As such, we are to make every effort in God’s strength to live a daily life as best we can, not as best we like-but in a way that is pleasing to Him in light of living against the grain of of the culture-the “evil age”. Finally, we live out this journey in full trust and faith in Jesus Christ who is the One and only ONE that makes possible this new life in the living God through Jesus Christ. And these are the THREE ELEMENTS OF AN AUTHENTIC CHRISTIAN. In the words of the Apostle Paul: “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20). HAPPY GOOD FRIDAY and Easter-Resurrection Day!
