HOW TO PREPARE FOR RESURRECTION DAY(Easter)
With Easter right around the corner, how can you prepare for resurrection? Today, I want to look in detail what happened just before Jesus was crucified in light of how Jesus prepared for his own resurrection day. We tend to read over what Jesus did prior to his death and resurrection. As a result, we tend to miss the model He left us for how we can and should prepare in remember ace and celebration of all He did for us as celebrated in what has come to be known as “Resurrection Day”. Without further ADOO, let’s jump right in by reading the biblical account describing how Jesus himself prepared for his own resurrection.
“And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them,“See, we are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to deathand deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.” (Matt. 20:17-19).
FIRST: Jesus specifically went to the city of Jerusalem “And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem…
- SECOND: Jesus pulled his 12 closest disciples aside to speak of what was to and what must happen. “…he took the twelve disciples aside…”
- THIRD: As Jesus walked with his 12 disciples he spoke very soberly to them, pointing out very specifically that he was taking them to Jerusalem in particular and no other city. “and on the way he said to them,“See, we are going up to Jerusalem.
- FOURTH: Jesus made very clear as to what was to happen, obviously of his free will, telling them what would happen to him, saying, “And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes…”
- FIFTH: Jesus made Clear what the Jewish priests and scribes would do to him, including being handed over to the Gentiles which was not good. “…and they will condemn him to deathand deliver him over to the Gentiles…”
- SIXTH: As we near the end of this verse, we see just how clear Jesus was regarding what they were about to see regarding just how badly they would treat Jesus. Jesus also tells them this is the end of the line for this chapter in the story in that He was about to go through extremely bad treatment and then be put to death. I cannot imagine what Jesus went through in having to tell his disciples and friends such news. I cannot imagine how his disciples felt, knowing that they left everything they had and knew to follow the Savior who would now be put to death. Jesus was preparing their hearts and minds as best He could for what they would see as Jesus made abundantly clear that he would be handed over to the authorities “to be mocked and flogged and crucified…” Here once again, the Lord Jesus anticipated His death and resurrection as He did in Matthew 16:21; 17:9, 22, and 23. But here, Jesus did something different in that He referred to the way He would die-by the worst, most cruel way, which was crucifixion.
- SEVENTH AND LASTLY: Jesus gives them the good news…which I sense didn’t really sink in literally regarding the fact that He would be raised from the dead. Perhaps they thought that Jesus would be raised spiritually and not physically. This this is what He said: “and he will be raised on the third day.” Jesus have then the exact day He would rise from the day.
In closing, I would imagine that his disciples were stunned, confused, and perhaps in shock. Jesus prepared them as best He could for what was about to happen and what they were about to see and experience. In application, as things change in our country, in our our lives, our in our world, let’s keep in mind that Jesus is preparing you and I daily to be part of His great plan. Let’s remember daily that His plan will most likely (or most certainly) entail some level of trials, sufferings and challenges. Through it all, let’s keep in mind that in life, we too, like Jesus will experience being mocked for our faith in Jesus, and that one day in the future, we too will will faith death for one reason or another-be buried…and yes, resurrected with Jesus Christ. My final take away is this. We all have much to be thankful for. Let’s not focus on what we have lost but rather what we have gained in Christ and in our physical lives. In the end, let’s strive to stay faithful to Jesus to the very end just as Jesus stayed faithful to the Father to the end. and in the interim, let’s enjoy life today, take advantage of the peace that surpasses all understanding offered only to believers in Jesus, and take advantage of all the daily blessings He gives us. With each passing day. HAPPY RESURRECTION DAY in advance.-Steven Garofalo
