According to the Oxford Dictionary, a "HEDGE" is "a fence or boundary formed by closely growing bushes or shrubs. It can also mean to "LIMIT". In biblical terms, God uses the word "HEDGE" to speak of His protective hedge blessed upon Israel and His people (including you and I). A hedge draws boundaries as to what is allowed to come IN or let OUT. In Scripture, a hedge of protection disallows God's enemies into Israel to bring harm or damage His people. When God's people rebel against Him, God judges Israel and His people. As a result, God needs only to REMOVE His supernatural hedge of PROTECTION as a judgement. The result is almost always violent, full of mayhem, war, violence and the encroachment of evil upon God's people. God does not MAKE evil increase-He simply allows it to manifest through His judgement upon the land and His people.
We often think of God’s judgement as something like the “Flood” or the burning of a city like "Sodom and Gomorrah”. But overwhelmingly, in most cases, God’s judgement comes in the form of His hand of protection. I believe this to be the case with the world at large; especially the United States which has largely forgotten God-the biblical God, the true God of the universe. Let’s take a look at Isaiah 5 verses 5-6 below for greater clarification regarding "God's hedge" of PROTECTION and PROVISION.
“5 And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. 6 I will make it a waste; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and briers and thorns shall grow up; I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.” (Isaiah 5:5-6)
JUDGEMENT: The inevitable penalty for Israel (In Isaiah 5) would be removal of God’s protective “HEDGE” which would result in invasion by her enemies. Also, notice that the end of verse six speaks to God's judgement in His withdrawal of "PROVISION" in that He would cause the rain clouds NOT to produce rain upon Israel. Rain is water, and water is necessary for drinking water for people and their livestock, to clean, to water crops, and to sustain life.
To be sober about the present time we live in, we are clearly in a time of losing God's "hedge of protection and provision". In all honestly though, God's "hedge" of protection and provision ebb and flow with mankind's tendency to rebel against God. As such, this should bring clarity as to our current national and world state.
WHAT CAN WE DO?
As followers of Jesus Christ, we have our work cut out for us. But that is simply our mission anyhow as Christians. God's Word tells us in Jeremiah 18:7-10. "7 "If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down and destroyed, 8and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned. 9And if at another time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be built up and planted, 10and if it does evil in my sight and does not obey me, then I will reconsider the good I had intended to do for it."
Jeremiah said that God "...will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned." I am confident that in time, God will restore a humbled people to a much better place. It's the process that humbles them and the processes that purifies God's people to become more godly, more rightly in their biblical thought and actions. And more right with God. Hang on-Good things are to come:.)
