Paul says that we as believers are to be found “…having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might…” (Ephesians 1:18-19)
So, what is Paul saying here. I can understand the words, but not certain as to the context or central point. Let’s answer that question. The Apostle Paul tells us in Ephesians 1:18-19 that we ought to be sensitive and aware of “THE EYES OF OUR HEARTS or better yet our UNDERSTANDING”. This phrases speaks specifically to our spiritual understanding. The word “HEART” in Scripture is considered the very center and core of life. To describe this, Paul uses words that picture the heart looking out with eyes that have been brightened with divine illumination. Paul says that we are to have eyes of our hearts enlightened so that we may KNOW “WHAT IS THE HOPE”. What hope?
Paul here is praying that BELIEVERS would know:
- The hope of God’s calling.
- The riches of God’s inheritance (which the saints are).
- And the great power of God displayed in Christ’s Ressurection and exhalation (vs.20). This in hole is every believer’s hope.
While a Christian may hope many things, Paul is speaking about the one HOPE that all Christians have in common (4:4), the Lord Jesus Christ (Col. 1:5, 27). In Him and only in Him do we find true hope and riches.
IN SUMMARY: Paul is praying here (vs.17) that they might have true spiritual insight into God. He uses the phrase, “having the eyes of your heart enlightened”. Paul’s request for them to know God within proper bounds because their hearts had been already been enlightened (the Greek perfect tense indicates past action with continued results here as discussed in verses 3-14.
Paul’s focus is that they (the Ephesian church) now might know God personally so “that you may know”. The word “KNOW” (vs.18) is from the Greek (eidenai), meaning “factual knowledge”. This is speaking to a general need to know facts such as about their equipment and men before one goes into battle. In other words, the world is a “spiritual” battle ground for the truth of God through Christ and we must KNOW FACTUAL KNOWLEDGE about God and Scripture at the very center of our hearts if we are to live out our faith rightly on earth. The bottom line is that all of us ought to be sensitive and aware of “THE EYES OF OUR HEARTS or our spiritual understanding if we are to live our our faith rightly. Remember, the “HEART is the center of our personality. And in the end, if we seek God with the eyes of our hearts rightly focussed, our understanding will be enlightened, and as a result, we will KNOW WHAT THIS TRUE HOPE Paul is speaking about is.
