“And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on” (Mark 12:42-44 ESV).
Picking up from where we left off in PART 1 regarding "GIVING", the amount the widow gave was “all she had”. Jesus did this this in an effort to teach His disciples as well as you and I today that God doesn’t measure how much we give, but how much we retain. Those with greater income have an obligation to return a larger percentage of it to God’s work.
What was going on was that rich people were contributing large sums of money out of their vast wealth while the poor widow offered all she had to live on in giving her two small copper coins. The two small coins given by the widow were the smallest coins in circulation at that time, worth 1/64th of a denarius. What is interesting is that this was the same amount that the Temple authorities gave to the poor so they could obtain bread for the day. So it was like a wash. After all, she could have just kept one coin, at least to obtain half of her food allotment, but she didn’t.
Jesus told His disciples that this widow contributed “more than all” the others. She didn’t give more in sheer quantity, for some gifts were very large. But the others gave from their surplus, but this woman gave sacrificially. Scripture says that she gave “all she owned”. As she departed, she had nothing to purchase food until she found work or until God provided. But she believed God would sustain her.
The bottom line is that the amount of the gift one gives is not the greatest significance. Commitment of heart and sacrifice means more to God.
IN APPLICATION:
1. FIRST: In America and throughout the world, there are many, many more people of wealth than in the time of Jesus.
2. SECOND: Today, there are far less Christians giving of themselves sacrificially/biblically than there were in the past.
3. THIRD: There has been mission drift by many Christian ministries which may explain at least in part #2-Why people are giving less.
4. FORTH: There is a sickness in American culture to give to the most popular ministries that already have more than enough funding at the expense of many smaller ministries.
Let’s remember and be careful to practice hospitality and giving heart. Let’s not take advantage of others who are generous and good hearted. If fail to do this, I promise you will face God in having to answer as to WHY you took and why you failed to give. If you choose to give and reciprocate, even when it costs you something, you will be blessed on earth and in eternity. And remember-“It is more blessed to give than to receive”.
IN CLOSING: Let’s make sure that we give sacrificially and without a reluctant heart. Let’s remember that “Each one must give as he had decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver (2 CORINTHIANS 9:7).
