My schedule disallowed me entering a Friday devotion, so today, I want to offer up a few words from Colossians regarding the importance of bearing with one another in the difficult times we find ourselves in.
God tells us: “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patients, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive” (Colossians 3:13).
Please allow me to briefly break down some of my thoughts regarding what God is telling us regarding the importance of bearing with one another.
FIRST: We are called by God to bear with one another in this difficult times we live in. This is not an option but a command from God.
SECOND: If we (or another person) has a complaint about the other, let’s make sure to help mitigate the hurt or disagreement before we in the body of a Christ create harm-offending one another and ultimately God.
THIRD: When we find that we have been offended by another person, let’s be quick to forgive our brother or sister for the harm. That being said, if that person continues to offend or harm you or others, you will eventually need to totally disengage with them after bringing a second and third witness to confront and help them right their wrongs. If that fails, you will need to bring that person and their issue to the church as a final attempt for correction before ex-communicating then from the body of Christ (Matthew 28:15-20). The good news is that if we start authentically forgiving one another daily, we will avoid most of our problems to begin with.
4) Lastly, let’s take serious the fact that the Lord forgave us first. God’s word tells us that we MUST forgive others as God forgave us while we still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). If Christ died for our sins, allowing us to be forgiven, we must extend the same to others in the world; it's not an option.
In conclusion, God tells us: “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patients, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive” (Colossians 3:13).
