Have you ever noticed that the speaking the TRUTH is scary and often hurts? It hurts you if you speak the truth more than it does the person you’re speaking with who needing correction, who is receiving the truth. Let's also be careful how and who we speak the truth, because we are speaking on behalf of God and His Word, and we are accountable as to how we handle speaking that truth.
The bottom line is that God calls us to speak the truth, equip the saints for the unity of the body as one unit so that we are able to go out and proclaim the truth of God (Ephesians 4:11-15). In America’s earlier years, building character was coveted, valued and sought after. In those those days of old, critical feedback was accepted, even when those receiving it didn’t necessarily like hearing it. That being said, one must filter critical feedback for it’s truthfulness in light of the truth speaker’s possible motives. If that motive or those motives are biblical, it should be good, but if for selfish, humanly selfish reasons, there may still be shades of truth found in them, but be careful to discover those; eat the meat and leave the bones.
In those days of the past, when culture was more biblical centered, even when it hurt, critical feedback in truth was accepted and in most cases ingested with "discernment" for its content, and implemented as the most valuable of all things in life. Today, nobody wants to told anything due to their perceived cultural belief that what they want to believe to be the truth is true, simply because they believe it to so, or want to believe it as such. It the exact same thing going on in Judges 17:6 “In those days there was no king in Israel, Everyone did what was right in their own eyes”.
Sadly, many Christian speakers don’t always speak the truth for various reasons. Be discerning with what you put into your head because is that you will perceive as the truth and live out in in your life as the truth of God. When I look at Ephesians 4, I see four things we can do to tune up our faith-life and how we live our faith out in the world daily. Paul lived it, so lets see what he writes by inspiration for God.
1) God calls us to attain unity of faith within the body of Christ and increase in our knowledge of the Son of God so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves of the world.
2) If we fail to do so, we risk being carried about by every wind of human cunning in the name of Jesus Christ as-proclaimed or so called “Christian doctrine”-even when not right but wrong, not true but false. As a result, we do what is right in our own eyes as the “truth” of God.
3) Paul tells us in Ephesians 4 that such false doctrine comes from human cunning, crafty schemes which flow out of human arrogance, desire for control and in some cases illegitimate requests for money.
4) In Stark contrast, God makes clear through Paul in Ephesians 4 verse 15, “Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working property, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love”.
Starting today let’s make a concerted effort to start afresh as God calls you and I to speak the TRUTH in LOVE to a lost world angered by the truth-because God is the Truth. In today’s world, speaking God/Truth is considered bad by the world, called hurtful by the angered lost of our world, intolerant in many cases by the radical, and even illegal by the most radically opposed to God and God’s truth. You can do this, but it takes courage, power and direction from the Holy Spirit, our Helper. We got this! Blessings to you this day and please remember: “Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,…” (Ephesians 4:15)
