Jesus said in Mark 3:25, “If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand”. Jesus’ point was that a house divided against itself cannot stand and an organization divided against itself will ultimately fail. Today I want to show you that a top-performing employee who disunities the rest of the team is not worth keeping on the team. In the end, as a leader, you ought not be afraid to eliminate the source of disunity from your organization. It’s your responsibility as a leader.
I had the privilege of working for a small company run by mature CHRISTIANS. I was shocked to find a group of young, godly, professional men and women racing to serve the others in doing the actual work in setting up for a major job fair. That turned out to be the norm. This was so polar opposite than what I had experienced in corporate culture up until that point. The unity of the company made going to work a joy, and the productivity of the company very high-which in turn brought a great deal of energy to the team. Just prior to that job, I has worked for a PR form made up of atheists who created a culture mired in an “every man and woman for themself” attitude. In that case, unity was replaced by selfish ambition, joy for competition, and the company suffered as a result.
Dr. Ron Jensen makes the point that a true leader is man or woman of quality, and quality leadership by its very nature produces unity. A wise leader is willing to take the hits and as needed-is willing to sacrifice in order to foster and build unity.
When disunity is being sown, successful leaders should terminate or relocate the person sowing disunity-even when that person is a very talented individual. This rarely if ever happens in our modern age because culture has evolved into a results only oriented culture valuing the bottom line based on profit, market share and end-driven results as opposed to character. As a result, the company suffers, moral suffers, and the bottom line for the company along with the rest of the productive employees suffer.
In the end, if the person sowing disunity is allowed to stay and prosper at the the expense of the rest of the team, the company and employees end up losing in the long run. Many managers tend to be short-sited, and as a result, they fail to understand that the majority of the team, though less talented, would be more successful as a unified body if the disunity was eliminated. Unity is essential to a company’s morale, to the quality of its work environment, and to an organizations success.
Looking back to what Jesus was saying, I want to provide you with four important biblical Scriptures regarding the importance of unity within the body of Christ, corporate bodies, government and family units. Jesus’ point about unity in mark 3:25 fit’s into verses 23-26 as a reply “in parables”as a threefold message that contrasted unity and disunity. Nothing-including Satan’s kingdom-can stand if it is divided. Please read the following four short verses as we wrap up today’s devotion.
“I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment” (1 Corinthians 1:10).
“Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind” (1 Peter 3:8).
“A Song of Ascents. Of David. Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!” (Psalm 133:1)
“Complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind” (Philippians 2:2).
In conclusion, “If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand” (Mark 3:25). When Jesus said that a house divided against itself cannot stand, he made clear in application that an organization divided against itself will ultimately fail. Jesus was saying in fact that this principle is true for every kind of human endeavor. In the end, as a leader and/or manager, don’t be afraid to eliminate the source of disunity from your organization. It’s your responsibility as a leader.
