An Ultimate Moral Law-Mandates An Ultimate Moral Law Giver
By Steven Garofalo M.A.A.
U.S. Olympian and famous virgin Lori “Lolo” Jones spoke to the abuse of sexuality taken out of context as God created it by Hollywood in her response to the release of Fifty Shades of Grey, “God Didn’t Create Sex For That Purpose”. The accomplished Olympian said that saving herself for marriage is the “hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life.”[i] If Lolo can do it with the pressure of being a public figure, we can as well. On the surface, this appears to only be addressing sexual behavior before marriage.
On January 24th MTV published an article about a new Reality Television Show-showing couples having sex in a sound-proof box. In an Article titled New Show ‘Sex Box’ Features Couples Having Sex On Television… Seriously, writer Madeline Roth writes… “The Premise? Yep, it’s exactly what you think: “troubled” couples — suffering from things like infidelity and trust issues — will have sex in a soundproof, camera-free hanging glass contraption while a panel of experts discusses their relationship mere feet away….” [ii]
I see something much deeper going on here though; namely the rejection of God, His ultimate moral law. At the center of the issues is the rejection of the existence of God and His ultimate moral law which help leads us to His agape love. Logic mandates that an ultimate moral law requires an Ultimate Law Maker. The argument for a theistic God using reason goes like this.
1) Every law has a law giver.
2) There is a moral law.
3) Therefore, there is a Moral Law Giver.
If the first and second premises are true, then the conclusion necessarily follows as true and valid. The “Moral Law” is what connects God’s principles to our hearts and minds. Romans chapter two tells us, “For when the Gentles who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.” (Romans 2:14-15) ESV. What the Apostle Paul is saying here is that everyone knows the Moral Law because it is written on our hearts and minds (conscience) by our Creator, almighty God himself. We can deny it in our emotions and actions, but all human beings know deep down inside their hearts, what is morally right, and what is morally wrong.
C.S. Lewis put it this way. “(As an atheist), my argument against God was that the universe seemed so cruel and unjust. But how had I got this idea of just and unjust? A man does not call a straight line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line. What was I comparing this universe with when I called it unjust”?(FOOT NOTE) This raises the question, “What is Sex Box defining he source of love as they encourage and promote erotic sexual behavior to millions of young and old people alike as the solution to repair agape love in both the spirit and heart”? I think the answer starts in Genesis. “When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it” (Genesis 3:6) NIV. In short, the problem is that God created us in His image, and we have been returning the favor ever since. In closing, I would like to provide some simple responses we can offer others when confronted with the existence of God and His ultimate moral.

When we as Christians are confronted with objections against an absolute, God given moral law, we can respond with a couple of simple answers. First, we can respond with, “Why not?-Would that be immoral”? Or, “These are not my morals, they are our morals. I didn’t make them up any more than I made up 2+2=4. Be prepared because the moral relativism will often deny the moral law in one sentence while assuming it in the next. What I mean by that is that they will deny an Ultimate Moral Law but assume that what they are saying as an “ultimately morally right and true”.
The only person that fits the bill as Moral Law giver is God in the person of Jesus Christ. God created us, and we should be seeking to become more like Him than trying to make and mold God to fit what we want Him to be. When Christians are willing to share God’s Moral Law, culture will begin to see that the solution Sex Box is trying to solve-trust and infidelity, cannot be solved primarily by Eros, but by God’s agape love. From agape love, all the other forms of love naturally flow from God’s love for us in proper form. When we begin to do this, our own view of God and morality will be revolutionized and our desire and ability to share that truth with a lost and dying world seeking God’s true love through Sex In A Box.
